Choreographies of scale: coral signals
2024–
This animation experiment is inspired by scientific research on sperm motility in reef-building corals. In these early-branching animals, subtle changes in seawater chemistry trigger molecular signaling pathways that guide sperm movement toward the egg.
The project translates these microscopic biological processes into animated landscapes, combining computer animation with material-based stop-motion elements. Coral-like structures and molecular movements become shifting environments, allowing the viewer to move between micro and macro scales.
Through this transformation of scale, the work explores how invisible biological processes—normally occurring beyond human perception—can be experienced as spatial and ecological worlds.
